Fan Fridays #2

A little while back I discovered this acoustic cover of “Yuri The Only One” that I enjoyed, and decided to feature here for this week:

The singer has a captivating voice (love the chorus vocals,) and she plays the rhythm guitar very capably. The recording obviously isn’t professionally done, but the performance is great. Nice job, Angelkillsdevils!

Eventually, I want to re-make an acoustic version of “Yuri The Only One.” Maybe with some romantic violins in the mix too. Possibly as a Valentines Day release for next year… Does that excite anybody? (respond in comments)

Fan Fridays #3 – LeetStreet Boys on Japanese TV

Friday, June 26th, 2009

The show aired! Here’s the footage that went on NHK’s “The Netstar” over Japanese national TV:

It was a little weird being interviewed in my apartment, but I tried to go with the flow. First they wanted to film a band rehearsal in Boston, then a performance in LA, and this is what the producers decided to do. The focus of the show was on people who are ‘crazy about Japanese culture,’ so I didn’t take myself too seriously. The people from NHK were really nice, and it was surprising and flattering that so many cosplayers came out for the shoot! (Thanks everyone again.)

It’s definitely wild looking at a Japanese TV show and seeing my own face and song in it. My brother (who is currently teaching English in Japan) said it was really crazy turning on the TV and seeing his brother too.

Oh yeah, the fact that we rickrolled Japan is epic lulz! That’s gotta get written down in some sort of otaku record book…

Has anyone been to Japan? If so, what was it like?

Moment Of Truth

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

To think it’s been over a year since we released “Yuri The Only One…” After hundreds of thousands of views, adoring fans, raging trolls, and things I never imagined, here we are. Music video #2. The sophomore single. The real test for any band. Will the fans stay loyal, or go chasing after the next thing?

The success and attention since writing “Yuri The Only One” has changed my life. At the time, I was lovestruck with the people and experiences I had from attending anime conventions. I had to put my whole heart into it in order to write it, and there’s no way someone could fake it. For anyone who is a musician reading this, having a breakout single is every bit as awesome as it’s cracked up to be. It was something I wanted for many years, and I feel like I finally reached what I was trying to accomplish.

From playing in local bands, composing with midi, and running songwriting workshops at local anime conventions as a volunteer – now I’m getting invited to perform live at anime conventions all over North America, getting fan mail, signing autographs, and most importantly, meeting people I relate to and making friends. Thanks so much to everyone who enjoyed and helped share the song. Without you, none of it would have happened.

With “Yuri The Only One” LeetStreet Boys proved that there is an audience for otaku music. So now that we did it once, we’ve gotta do it again. In the music industry, you’re as good as your last hit. The public is fickle.

Early concept art for “Guitar Hero Hero.”

It took much longer than anticipated, with all types of unpredictable drama getting in the way. But after the smoke cleared, N8 pulled through countless hours, sharing the vision of artistic success. I can honestly say that we put everything we could into “Guitar Hero Hero,” and I’m confident that nobody is going to be disappointed. If LeetStreet Boys is meant to go further, this is what’s going to take it there.

Soon we’ll see…

Listen to LeetStreet Boys, Make the Grade

Here is a special treat for Presidents Day! Michael wrote his own version of “Yuri The Only One” for an Advanced Placement US History report, and even got an ‘A’ for his effort. We bring you “FDR’s The Only President For Me.” Music and lyrics below:

Lyrics
(Intro Riff)
You’re the 32nd President of the United States
You’re in a wheelchair but you got what it takes
Election of 32, you brought USA to a new clean slate
The Great Depression was no match for you
Your social programs always speak for true
If you don’t like FDR then go get a clue!

For the farms, and the poor, and banks
You’d do anything
For us you’d do anything

(Chorus) FDR’s the only president for me
He made the new deal can’t you see?
FDR’s the only president for me
He stands for justice and unity
FDR’s the only president for me
He saved the people of this great country
So I hereby dub thee
Best President in History!

Who but Hoover oh give me a break?
The man plagued this country with his mistakes.
That’s why you, FDR, are as sweet as cake.
You gave people jobs with the CCC
Saved poor men and their families
You tried your best to end all the poverty

For the farms, and the poor, and banks
You’d do anything
For us, you’d do anything

(Chorus, exclude last line)

FDR’s wife has got it pretty right
She did a lot for a woman of her time
I’m not sure what fits here that could rhyme
She is pretty riiiight
FDR’s wife has got it pretty right
She may not have been good looking
But that is quite alright
FDR’s wife has got it pretty right
Eleanor Roosevelt is somewhat riiight
(Soft Chorus, exclude last line)
(Chorus)
END
