Part 1 of our first guest article from B-Co — a guide of crazy and exotic snacks from Japan. B-Co is an artist with a sweet-tooth for Japanese candy. You can find her artwork on deviantART.

The first time I tried Japanese candy, was many many moons ago. I was on vacation in Disney World with my family. While at Epcot’s Japan section I bought a small bag of strawberry gummy candy. From that point on I knew I had to have more. I have been collecting candy wrappers from almost everything I’ve tried for the past 7 years, and I have the wrappers hiding under my bed to prove it. Every time i get a new shipment, it’s almost like a fancy wine tasting party, only better!

Everything I review will be on a simple 1 to 5 scale (1 being worst 5 being best.) I rate the Flavor of said product as well as their eye catching packages. I also rate whether its something worth buying multiple times. ~*100% of the products in this review were purchased from j-list.com (and are no longer available here to my knowledge as their stock changes regularly!)*~ ~*7 Spice Doritos*~ Flavor-3 Package-4 Unfortunately the flavor really didn’t stick with me. It was good, slightly sweet with a kick of something peppery…but the flavor died quickly after, leaving it tasting like a plain ol’ corn chip. One thing that was interesting about the chip though was it is a lot thicker then our regular Doritos. All in all, they were ok. The package is quite pretty though. Its got a rainbow on it! Buy it again? Probably not. ~*Peppered steak Doritos “Air”*~ Flavor-4 Package-3 Remember Doritos 3D? YUP they got em in Japan. Nothing too eye-popping about these Doritos. They tasted pretty good, a lot like a beef stock flavor with some black pepper cracked on it. It was a very expected flavor. Something i didn’t like about it though is it was the very definition of too much of a good thing. The good flavor gets a little sickening after a while and makes you not want to eat them for a while. As far as the package goes…kinda standard looking for Doritos. Buy it again? Good Chance. ~*Teriyaki Doritos*~ Flavor-4.5 Package-3 EXACTLY what you think it is! It really tasted like Teriyaki Doritos! Savory and sweet and delicious. Again, the package is standard looking for Doritos. With a picture of a juicy hamburger on it! Buy it again?- Heck yeah! More ‘Beyond Pocky’ reviews of Japanese snack cuisine coming up in part 2. Until then, have you ever tried any of these?
