Nintendo Kills The Hero Of Time
Dang it. Nintendo pulled out the cease and decist on The Hero Of Time. Not surprising, but disappointing.
I finally got to watch The Hero Of Time last week, and (despite some flaws) it was a fantastic piece of fandom. I guess I should feel privileged now to have seen it under the circumstances.
Why is Nintendo hating on the devotion and hard work of their fans? It’s not like they’re producing an actual Zelda movie, and it feels like they’re only picking on this one because it’s actually good. They can’t argue much about concern over bastardizing the franchise either. *cough* Ewe Boll *cough*
Update: If you would like to contact Nintendo Of America and let them know how much this sucks, you can do this here.
This sucks. Not only had I not seen the movie, but legally there is nothing Nintendo could have done to forcefully remove the movie.
Actually I believe the reason behind their cease and decist order on the fan-made film is because since the release of OoT there has been private talks about doing a full scale LoZ film. While it was never set into stone, the talks have been frequent over the years as they attempt to find both director, writers and cast that fits the roles for such a large scale project. I know they haven’t gone full throttle because like with Sony Games when they did their FF based film and went bankrupt Nintendo is looking to avoid such a large problem.
I recently saw most of the film and while never saw the ending I had to admit they did a good enough job on it for being a fan piece.
Where was the revolt when Dragonball evolution came out?
Mojohosavich, Evolution was a Professionally made movie from a Hollywood company, Hero of Time was a Fan made film, so it’s obvious as to why nobody spoke out with DBE.
Though, companies love to ruin Fan stuff, just like the Fan made Chrono Trigger Expansion got cut days before it’s release with a C&D letter, and I was looking forward to it too.
Dammit, I never got around to watching it. Need to see if I can find a copy that someone saved…
DanteReznor, while you have a point it should be noted that they fans who made this film adhered to every law they were “breaking”.
They made a fan film and only profited from it through advertising and donations, which is legal. If you are not making a commercial profit from something or claiming that it is yours then you are within fair use of the material. This is like shutting down fan fiction sites and the such. The only reason the movie was removed is because the group was afraid of Nintendo’s lawyers. Which shows how corrupt the leal system is.
My primary example here is Haruhi-chan. Instead of stamping it out Kyoani licensed it and turned it into a web series. I’m not saying Nintendo should do the same, but at least the could show some restraint and refrain from throwing their power at people.
I guess the point is that the Japanese are much more lenient about fan made content. After all fan made content is the bases of any game, anime, movie. It proves you did a good thing. Nintendo America just doesn’t understand that, and they never will.
Watching it right now! It still lives on in torrents… got a copy myself from thepiratebay. Sometimes it feels good to be a pirate >:D
I’d imagine this will survive the same way that ‘Nosferatu’ did.
Underground copies. I will see this movie.
Remember- once something is on the internet, it’s there forever.
